Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who discontinue new GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Findings released in a leading health publication shows that while obese people frequently drop about a fifth of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals purchasing such treatments must be aware of the potential of rapid weight regain when the therapy concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers point out that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise usually have a slower weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Experts propose the mode of action of the jabs explains the amplified rebound.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often ongoing.
This opinion is echoed by drug manufacturers, who note that the findings "underscore the long-term nature of obesity," similar to managing diseases like high blood pressure.
Patient Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced something that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
Ultimately, clinicians caution that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success relies on ongoing behavioural support.
